December 31 is the Last Day to Apply for an Independent Foreclosure Review

Before this week’s holiday whirlwind is over, we remind those who feel that they wrongly were placed into foreclosure proceedings that the deadline to apply for the Independent Foreclosure Review (IFR) program is Monday, December 31. To find out if you are eligible for the IFR program, which was designed to offer compensation to homeowners who were wrongfully foreclosed on in 2009 and 2010, please call the HPF-managed IFR hotline at 1-855-778-0855 before the end of the year. 888-995-HOPE, On Your TV

HPF’s 888-995-HOPE Hotline number may look a bit more familiar to you this week, thanks to a new Public Service Advertising (PSA) campaign alerting homeowners to the mortgage relief available through the Making Home Affordable (MHA) program.

The advertising campaign urges homeowners to call HPF’s Hotline at 888-995-HOPE in order to speak with a housing expert about eligibility for the MHA program, which has been extended through the end of 2013. Halting Evictions for the Holidays: HPF is Ready to Help

Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac announced recently that they are suspending foreclosure evictions from December 19 through January 2 to allow borrowers to remain in their homes for the holidays. Additionally, some of the nation’s largest banks – including Wells Fargo, Bank of America, SunTrust, and Citigroup – have announced that they too will halt foreclosure activity until after the New Year. Student Debt and The Dutch Boy With His Finger in the Dike

Money Management International (MMI), one of HPF’s partner agencies, released a survey this week revealing why there is a compelling need for debt counseling.

The survey found that more than 40 percent of its clients with student loans weren’t aware that they could possibly qualify for a lower monthly payment schedule because of a layoff or another economic adversity.  Some 27 percent were struggling to make payments, were close to missing them, or were already in default.  More than 50 percent had more than $25,000 in student debt. Independent Foreclosure Review Deadline Approaching – Call 1-855-778-0855 for Program Details!

If your primary home was foreclosed upon and you suspect that there was something not quite right with the process, the Independent Foreclosure Review program may be able to help you.  The program, which expires on December 31, 2012, was designed to provide compensation to homeowners who were unfairly impacted by inappropriate lender practices during a foreclosure process in 2009 and 2010. St. Louis Beacon reporter Mary Delach Leonard’s recent three part housing crisis series profiled the Hoffmans, a family from St. Peters, Missouri who fought foreclosure for three years before receiving a loan modification via the guidance of an HPF housing counselor.  The struggles of the Hoffman family mirror those of so many homeowners who call the Hotline, many of whom admit that they felt hopeless before speaking with a housing counselor about their options. In addition to needing our counselors’ assistance to minimize or avoid foreclosure process challenges, they report that they were approached by — or worse, duped by — the growing number of con artists and scammers that prey on distressed homeowners. We’re sending out hearty congratulations today to Sanjeev Handa, the newly appointed Chairman of HPF’s Board of Directors.

Sanjeev, who first joined our Board last year, is Managing Director and Head of the Global Real Estate Fixed Income team at TIAA-CREF.  He has an exceptional breadth and depth of housing market knowledge and financial expertise that will be invaluable to the whole HPF organization as we continue to work to provide homeowners with the information and guidance they need to make informed decisions about their mortgage issues and related financial challenges.  We wish him well in his new role!
